19. Halloween and Carnival

Behind the masked play and dance, there is a comfort provided by anonymity. There also lay humor and satire to expand revealing contradictions in our society and to challenge the authority and the common knowledge of current social order.

The culture, which is related to ghosts, devils and witches, is of the nonmaterial 4th dimension spiritual world beyond the consciousness and common knowledge of the human beings. Though they are uncomfortable existences, various cultural expressions for coexistence and reconciliation with uncomfortable existences are forming various layer of discourse structure over the world.

The cultural space for reconciliation and coexistence between the human beings and ghosts is very restrictive. Rituals of shamans, conversation and channeling through mediums, conversation through exorcists, the talented of special ability to communicate with heaven have been providing intended and infected informations through their narrow views and the spectrum of their own opinions. The existence of ghosts, devils and witches carved the negative energy of fear and horror at the deep layer of unconsciousness.

The culture of ghosts, devils and witches has expanded to a festival beyond a simple play or performance. The instances are the Halloween and Carnival  in the western culture. To become a friend with a ghost, to reconcile with a devil and to hang out with a witch, so many shapes of masks have appeared.  The festival of sharing some foods like candies or chocolates has a positive function to narrow the distance between ghosts and humans as well as reconciling between them.

The appearances of ghosts, witches or devils in Halloween party play the role of spouting the horror and fear in human beings, beyond a vein of humor. Mostly young people enjoy that kind of festival. Behind their voluntary and creative party, there is a de facto power which plans and enjoys this festival. It is also true that those festivals are doing well as intended by them.

The favorite time for thief is not late night but when people are out of their seats to have a fun and a joy. To hold confidentially a major event, intriguing something behind a big festival or a big event will be the  safest way.

There is a truth in a falsity and a falsity in a truth. There is a hiding in a revealing and a revealing in a hiding. The festival of ghosts and witches is a sort of revealing. There is a truth to hide in this revealing. The cultural codes of Halloween and Carnival need to be considered in this context.

While you are dancing under masks, the dark forces hiding behind the festival, wearing another masks, are preparing their own festival to have a fun and a joy on their own purpose. As Udeka knows all of it, they also know the truth of ghosts, devils and witches. They are very drastically, very confidentially mediating the hiding in the revealing and the revealing in the hiding.
